Structural Utility Service Racks
CLIENT
ROSS Engineering were successfully awarded the installation of 580t of structural steel utility racks. The racks were all constructed at ground level in 50m x 6m long bays. Once this was completed the mechanical and electrical traded fully fitted out the utility racks. The challenge was then for ROSS Engineering to mechanically lift each bay into position which weigher approximately 70 tonne before fixing them into structural columns 7m above ground level.
Project Challenges: Mechanical and Electrical Services Coordination: Collaborate with Utility Tech Engineering to determine the layout and specifications for mechanical and electrical services, such as HVAC ducts, plumbing, and electrical conduits.
Positioning Preparation: Carefully prepare the building’s structural elements to receive the racks, including leveling and reinforcement of the designated installation areas.
Jacking and Placement: Utilize specialized equipment, such as hydraulic jacks and rigging systems, to lift and position the loaded racks into their designated spots within the building.
Alignment and Securement: Ensure precise alignment and securement of the racks, verifying that all mechanical and electrical connections are properly interfaced.
Safety Measures: Develop a safety plan, including risk assessments and safety procedures for jacking the loaded racks into position.
Quality Assurance: Conduct quality checks to verify the integrity of the racks and the proper functioning of integrated services.
Load Testing: Perform load testing to ensure the racks can withstand the anticipated weight of services and any dynamic loads.
The “Efficient Utility Integration” project demonstrates the successful integration of structural utility service racks, mechanical systems, and electrical services, enhancing the building’s functionality and efficiency while adhering to rigorous safety and quality standards. It stands as a testament to effective project planning, collaboration, and engineering expertise in optimizing utility distribution within a commercial building.
